- English source
- Chinese teaching draft — contains deliberate mistakes
- Reviewed Chinese subtitles
- Bilingual English + reviewed Chinese
To try the workbench, import the English source file. The draft and reviewed files are references, not a translation-import feature. Your own translation result will differ from this authored example.
1. Set the scene and the names
Mina and Theo are filming a craft demonstration in a workshop. Moon Lantern is the name of their repaired paper-lantern prop. They are arranging the camera view before turning on its electric light.
| Source term | Preferred Chinese form |
|---|---|
| Mina | 米娜 |
| Theo | 西奥 |
| Moon Lantern | 月光灯 |
Use Mina → 米娜, Theo → 西奥 and Moon Lantern → 月光灯 when these terms are translated. Cue 17 deliberately quotes the exact text for a title card, “Mina & Theo”; keep that inscription as written. A glossary is guidance, not a reason to ignore the meaning of a line.
2. Review three choices in context
Cue 2: Keep a prop name consistent
- English source
- Theo, bring the Moon Lantern to the table.
- Teaching draft
- 西奥,把月亮灯拿到桌上。
- Reviewed wording
- 西奥,把月光灯拿到桌上。
Why change it? Moon Lantern is a named prop, so use the chosen form 月光灯 instead of switching to 月亮灯. Search the rest of the file for competing forms before export.
Cue 8: Read the neighboring cue before choosing a meaning
- English source
- Mina: Wait until the glue has set.
- Teaching draft
- 米娜:等把胶水摆好。
- Reviewed wording
- 米娜:等胶水固化后再开灯。
Why change it? Cue 7 asks whether the light can be switched on. Here, “the glue has set” means the glue has hardened, not that someone has put it in place. The reviewed line makes the answer to that question clear.
Cue 12: Resolve the reference and the scene
- English source
- Leave room on the left for its shadow.
- Teaching draft
- 在左边给它的影子留个房间。
- Reviewed wording
- 在左侧留点空白,让灯的影子能入镜。
Why change it? Cues 10 and 11 describe camera framing. “Room” means empty space, and “its” refers to the lantern. The revised line describes leaving space for the lantern’s shadow in the picture, rather than a physical room.
Only cues 2, 8 and 12 differ between the teaching draft and the reviewed Chinese file. No cue is deleted, renumbered or retimed. These edits are examples of review decisions, not a measured correction rate.
3. Save corrections, then decide what needs retranslation
In the workbench, select a translated cue, edit it and use Save line or Save and continue. Saving a manual edit locks that cue. A change still marked unsaved has not been saved to the project.
Later translation skips locked cues. Updating the glossary or context does not automatically rewrite existing translations, so check other occurrences yourself.
If a corrected cue really needs a new translation, unlock it and choose Translate again under More actions. Review the new result before saving it. Retranslation can use translation credits; it is not an unlimited free extension of the trial.
4. Export the version your reviewer needs
Choose translated-only output for the reviewed Chinese text, or bilingual output for English followed by Chinese within each cue. Both keep the source numbers and timestamps. This guide’s bilingual download contains the reviewed wording, not the teaching draft.
- Compare cue count, numbering and timestamps with the original: this example stays at 18 cues.
- Search for Mina, Theo and Moon Lantern and review each use, including intentionally quoted wording.
- Open the export with your actual video in a player or editor. Check synchronization, reading time and line wrapping; bilingual text may occupy more screen space.
- Save outstanding edits before exporting. If your own file is incomplete, a partial export retains the source for untranslated cues and includes partial in its filename. That is not a completed translation.
This example has no accompanying video, so its timestamps cannot demonstrate audio synchronization. The translation workbench preserves source timing; it does not fix a timing problem already in the source.

The downloadable files contain the complete sequence shown here. The Chinese draft is provided separately for comparison.
Mina: The workshop is ready for filming.
米娜:工作室已经准备好拍摄了。
Theo, bring the Moon Lantern to the table.
西奥,把月光灯拿到桌上。
Theo: Is this the one we repaired yesterday?
西奥:是我们昨天修好的这盏吗?
Mina: Yes. Hold it by the wooden base.
米娜:对。托住它的木底座。
The paper shade is still quite delicate.
纸灯罩还是很容易碰坏。
Put the blue mat under it, please.
请把蓝色垫子放在它下面。
Theo: Can I switch the light on now?
西奥:现在可以开灯了吗?
Mina: Wait until the glue has set.
米娜:等胶水固化后再开灯。
Theo: Then I'll check the camera first.
西奥:那我先检查相机。
Mina: Keep the whole lantern in the frame.
米娜:让整盏灯都留在画面里。
The handle must stay visible too.
提手也要拍进去。
Leave room on the left for its shadow.
在左侧留点空白,让灯的影子能入镜。
Theo: Like this, or a little farther back?
西奥:这样,还是再往后一点?
Mina: That's right. Don't move the mat.
米娜:这样正好。别动垫子。
Now we can show how the handle folds.
现在可以演示怎么折叠提手了。
Theo: Shall I add the title card?
西奥:要加上标题画面吗?
Mina: Write "Mina & Theo" under the title.
米娜:在标题下面写上“Mina & Theo”。
Then hold the last shot for three seconds.
然后让最后一个镜头停留三秒。

The free SRT checker and time shifter process subtitle text locally in your browser without sign-in. Anonymous usage counts may be sent, but subtitle text and file names are not included. They do not send your file to the workbench.
